Praelexis interviews Dylan Coetzee

At Praelexis we offer six-week internships over the June-July holidays. This year Dylan joined us as an intern. He is passionate about sports and festivals. Praelexis interviewed him about his data science journey.

If you’re interested in joining us for an internship, please email vacancies@praelexis.com with the subject line “Internship.” Be sure to include your CV, transcript, and a motivational letter. For more information, you can read about it here or get in touch with us directly.

Your Data Science Journey

Question: How did you first become interested in data science? Was there a specific moment or experience that sparked your curiosity?

Answer: As a child, I was always curious, particularly about the workings of technology and computers. This curiosity intensified during high school when Stellenbosch University visited Pretoria to present a talk on their newly introduced Data Engineering degree. The talk sparked a profound interest in me, setting me firmly on the path towards pursuing this field.

Favorite Algorithm

Question: Do you have a favourite machine-learning algorithm? What draws you to it, and how have you applied it in your work?

Answer: I am fond of Large Language Models (LLMs), due to their transformative impact on natural language processing and understanding. What draws me to LLMs is their remarkable ability to comprehend and generate human-like text, making them incredibly versatile for a wide range of applications. From chatbots and virtual assistants to content creation and translation, LLMs have proven to be invaluable tools in automating and enhancing various tasks that involve language.

In my work, I've leveraged LLMs to assist users in generating detailed responses, based on custom company data eliminating the need to go find the answer in a bunch of unstructured files. I also used LLMs to create an AI melody generator, by asking the computer to create a new melody based on a popular composer's style.

Favourite Data Visualisation Metaphor

Question: Data visualisations can be powerful storytelling tools. If you had to compare a complex dataset to something in the real world (e.g., a landscape, a dance, or a recipe), what would it be, and why?

Answer: If I had to compare a complex dataset to something in the real world, it would be like building with a giant box of LEGO bricks. At first, it might look like a chaotic pile of colourful pieces with no clear purpose. But as you start sorting through the bricks—organising by size, shape, and colour, much like cleaning and structuring data—you begin to see the possibilities. Each piece of data fits together to form patterns, insights, and visualisations, just as each LEGO brick clicks into place to create a magnificent structure. And, of course, there's always that one elusive brick you can never find, much like the elusive insight or outlier that adds a twist to your analysis and makes the process all the more engaging!

Data Science Adventure

Question: If data science were an adventure novel, what would the title be? Describe the thrilling plot—complete with data quests, mysterious algorithms, and unexpected discoveries.

Answer: The story will be called "The Data Runner" instead of "The Maze Runner."

In this version, the maze is replaced by unstructured datasets. Instead of monsters, there are bugs. Dependencies take the place of the deadly virus. And just like in the movie, if a team of data scientists collaborates, they can overcome the challenges (the maze) and develop an effective solution.

Data Science Dream Project

Question: Imagine you have unlimited resources and time. What ambitious data science project would you tackle?

Answer: The ideal project would involve working with data-driven solutions in the aviation industry. Aeroplanes have always fascinated me, and combining that fascination with data engineering and science would tick all the boxes.

Outside the Office

Question: When you’re not immersed in data science, what hobbies or activities do you enjoy? Any surprising interests?

Answer: When I'm not immersed in data engineering/science, I love engaging in various sports, both as a participant and a supporter. Whether it's playing a game or cheering on my favourite teams, sports are a significant part of my life. I also enjoy attending festivals and socialising with friends. And then as always, I love a braai—a beloved tradition that combines great food and even better company. These activities provide a perfect balance to my data-driven work and studies, allowing me to unwind and enjoy the vibrant social aspects of life.

Inspirations and Role Models

Question: Who inspires you in your field? Are there any role models or thought leaders whose work you admire?

Answer: While my parents and family aren't working in the same field as me, they have always been a significant source of inspiration to me. Their dedication, perseverance, and support have been instrumental in my journey. Their values have instilled in me a strong sense of determination and resilience. Without them, I wouldn't have the chance to pursue my dreams and achieve success.

Future Dreams

Question: What are your aspirations for the future? Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Answer: Retirement on a boat in Seychelles sounds tempting, but for now, my sights are set on pursuing a data engineering degree. In five years, I envision myself deeply entrenched in the world of data engineering, leveraging cutting-edge technologies to solve real-world problems and pushing the boundaries of what's possible with data-driven insights.

Praelexis Experience

Question: What has your experience been at Praelexis thus far?

Answer: During my internship at Praelexis, I had an incredibly enriching experience. I had the opportunity to work hands-on with the latest technologies, which significantly enhanced my technical skills and deepened my understanding of the field. The company's culture is vibrant and inspiring, with a cutting-edge architectural setup that fosters creativity and collaboration. The passion and dedication of the team members were truly motivating, and their willingness to share knowledge and support each other created a dynamic and supportive work environment. This internship has been invaluable in shaping my professional growth and fueling my enthusiasm for a career in data and AI. Moreover, the mentorship and guidance I received were exceptional, providing me with both technical insights and professional development opportunities that have been instrumental in my growth. I found myself constantly eager to learn more and take on new challenges, driven by the exciting and innovative projects I was involved in.
